Artist Statement

I am a painter who is primarily concerned with what I call the “autobiographical” image, this is defined as my ability to take the images that reflect my own way of perceiving the world and express them in my paintings. My world view is in turn nurtured by the affirmative power of my personal expressions. I am devoted to tracing the line of sense or reason that leads me from the creation of one image to those images that follow the initial image and subsequent paintings. The similarity between two or more paintings from a single artist is often said to be his or her individual “style”. Taking a closer look at what is generally termed “style” I notice that I do not arrive at a formula for making art that will look a certain way to produce works in accordance with that “style”. My painting makes my individual outlook fresh and clear because perceiving something as beautiful is directly related to ones ability to rearrange color and line “into” something pleasing to the eye. When I witness a person walking a dog and find that I am touched by the motion that the two figures make as they move in the distance, I then paint two stripes on a canvas based on that experience, one to represent the person and one to represent the dog. The canvas becomes the frame for my idea of a physically beautiful movement. Color and line are the tools by which I express this idea. To me the two stripes represent the beautiful movements of two living beings, to someone else the two stripes may represent something very different, yet it is my awareness of the origin of the two stripes on the canvas that strengthens my ability to use line and color to create the pictorial metaphor for “person and dog”. Therefore my “style” is actually an aftereffect of my investigation into the nature of the origins of my subject matter. My art is “autobiographical” in that my paintings are what validate and tell the story of my world view.
