I think hip-hop was good when it first emerged, got really interesting with Public Enemy, and began an indefinite, catastrophic decline after the rap/jazz fusion era (e.g., US3, Digable Planets, Guru, etc). The East Coast/West Coast nonsense really hurt the genre, the rock/rap fusion was an utter failure (looking at you Fred Durst!), and I just don't see much validity in the art form at this point. Hip-hop has gotten far too conservative, too commercial, and is failing to innovate or inspire. To tell you the truth, I haven't listened to hip-hop in almost six years, and what I heard back then was pretty lame. I'm certain nothing has changed since then.
